Magie Bros. - Products for the
Ink Industry
Magie Brothers has been a consistent source of high-quality petroleum
products and superior customer service since the company was
founded in 1888. For more that 60 years, Magie has been dedicated
to the printing ink industry and is now America's leading
supplier of specialty solvents and oils for the paste ink
market.
In the 1930s, Magie Bros. helped pioneer the first solvents
for use in heatset printing inks. Since that time, Magie has
dedicated itself to the industry, providing a constant source
of innovation, stability and reliability. Our products are
known worldwide and are the preferred choice for use in many
of North America's best-known publications. We also offer
a full line of low aromatic solvents specifically designed
for high-quality sheetfed inks.
Magie is always looking to the future, anticipating changing
markets and providing products to meet these needs. Our mission
is to support the industry's growth through the development
of new petroleum specialties with unique performance and application
characteristics.
Magie's technical department is supported by on-site customer
service laboratories at each manufacturing facility. Our ink
laboratory in Karns City, Pennsylvania and Penreco's Advanced
Technology Group in The Woodlands, Texas are always available
for special projects.
Heatset Ink Solvents
Magie's solvents are produced from a constant source of domestic
crude oil. This eliminates the variability when blending different
crude streams and reduces the amount of process unit adjustment
necessary to produce a consistent product. The heatset process
uses drying ovens (dryers) to evaporate the ink solvent out
of the substrate. The ink is then set and dries by oxidation.
Magie's heatset solvents are ideal due to their narrow boiling
ranges, which allow the ink to set properly onto the substrate
as it exits the press dryer.
The solubility characteristics of our ink solvents are also
very consistent. This is extremely important and reduces the
amount of batch adjustments required in the production of
vehicle systems and flushed pigment. Magie solvents are so
consistent that many ink laboratories use them as reference
solvents to evaluate resins and vehicles. In fact, the American
Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) requested MagieSol
47 be listed as an industry standard solvent for test purposes.

Sheetfed Ink Solvents
Magie's solvents are produced from a constant source of domestic
crude oil. This eliminates the variability of blending different
crude streams and reduces the amount of process unit adjustment
necessary to produce a consistent product. The sheetfed process
is generally printed on coated stock. Micro-pores in the stock
provide capillary action. This action preferentially draws
the lighter molecular weight portion of the ink solvent down
into the substrate. This causes the resin to precipitate out
onto the stock. The ink is then set and dries by oxidation.
Magie's solvents are ideal for sheetfed printing because
of their unique carbon distribution and narrow boiling ranges.
The narrow boiling range allows a system to be designed on
the edge of physical solubility so that it will perform properly
on a high-speed press without the drying problems that are
associated with wider boiling solvents. Solvency power of
the ink solvent is also very consistent, which reduces resin
kick-out and varnish/vehicle incompatibility problems associated
with batch-to-batch processing. Further technical advantages
may be discussed by calling Magie at 800-MAGIE 47.

Magie Bros. - Products for the
Aluminum Industry
In the early 1980s, Magie Brothers began marketing severely
hydrotreated oils as base oils for use in coolants for cold
rolling aluminum. Magie offers the aluminum industry a wide
range of rolling oils that provide excellent performance and
lubrication characteristics. Magie manufactures and services
a variety of base oils to be used in coolants that lubricate,
cool and clean aluminum for sheet and foil rolling.
From a constant supply of premium feedstock, our MagieSol
base oils are manufactured under tightly controlled conditions
to meet the highest standards. Our consistent source of crude
oil, narrow fractionating capabilities and severe hydrotreating
processes create exceptionally uniform finished products.
Magie services many aluminum companies using MagieSol base
oils in the coolants of their cold rolling mills. These mills
roll aluminum for tread plate, aerospace, beverage cans, transportation,
construction, fin stock, household foil and packaging foil.
As Magie supplies and services its base oils globally for
existing customers, we are also dedicated to serving the needs
of new customers through plant trials and technical assistance.
In North America, Magie is one of two leading manufacturers
of base oils for coolants used in cold rolling aluminum. Because
many of our customers operate worldwide, global consistency
in operations of rolled products is a requirement. Therefore,
customers have asked Magie to inventory premium MagieSol base
oils internationally. Already, Magie supplies millions of
gallons of hydrotreated base oils outside of North America
with a business objective to increase our global presence
where aluminum rolling mills operate.

Technical Support
Magie's laboratories constantly monitor the MagieSol base oils
to maintain consistent, reliable products. Magie's technical
sales staff and laboratory personnel in Franklin Park, Illinois
and Karns City, Pennsylvania can satisfy most technical needs
in a matter of hours. In addition, Penreco's Advanced Technology
Group located near Houston, Texas is always available for further
testing and research.
